The jungle boat trip to Rurrenabaque was a really amazing trip, but it wasn’t just an aimless adventure up stream – we’d gone to Rurrenabaque for a reason. This pretty little town is the main touristy centre for organising trips into the jungle and out to Las Pampas del Yacuma – the lush nature reserve at the heart of Santa Rosa in the Beni department of Bolivia. Having just been on the most extensive jungle tour available, it was Las Pampas I was here for.
I’d booked a tour through Fluvial tours back in La Paz after being advised that the agents there were much cheaper than those in Rurre. Fluvial were recommended by Deep Rainforest (the boat trip people) and we managed to get a 3 day, 2 night Pampas trip for 680Bs – around £60 – which turned out to be absolutely incredible value. This price included the 3 hour drive to and from Rurrenabaque, 3 (surprisingly good) meals a day and accommodation in a wooden, riverside cabin. It also included your guide for the 3 days and all the various activities which included; midnight alligator watching, piranha fishing, swimming with pink river dolphins, anaconda hunting, a sunrise river cruise and several long wildlife watching boat trips. Very different to the boat trip we’d just taken through the jungle, but equally, one of the best things I’ve ever done.
